Samoa Trip (part 3)
Nov 21st, 2006 by ck
In this episode, as mentioned, I’m writing about my arrival at Apia, Samoa and my impression about this tiny city.
After a terribly long flight of KL->Sydney->Apia (yes, around 20 hours), I finally managed to reach Faleolo Airport.
Here are some more photos to share with you guys:
Arrived the airport at 12am local time there. Doesn’t this look like some of the Chinese seafood restaurants in KL?

Some Samoans welcoming our arrival by playing guitar, wearing some skirt-like costume (don’t laugh, it’s their traditional attire)

Here it goes, after taking a shuttle bus, I reached the hotel at 2am! The most popular hotel in Samoa!

This was my room. Obviously not the best hotel room I’ve ever stayed, but believe me, when you’re tired, you just don’t care much.

Impression:
- People there are friendly, genuinely friendly.
- It is pretty remote and undeveloped. The road from airport to hotel was really bad. In fact, as a capital city, it looked rather like one of those rural areas in Malaysia. I feel like going 20 years backward…
- In addition to my previous point, local people there aren’t aware of the most of the stuffs in outside word, they were so amazed with my camera phone. As the matter of fact, GSM technology has just been implemented there.
- They are really, really A LOT of churches there. When I say a lot, I really meant it. From the 45 minutes ride from the airport to hotel, I could see at least 20 churches (a very prudence estimation in fact). But yeah, I guess they do have strong religious belief.
- Things weren’t really cheap, foods there didn’t suit me either. But taxi fare seemed to be OKAY to me.
- Don’t even think about seeing a skyscraper here. It’s not at all easy for you to find a building with more than 3 floors in Apia.
- Despite the similar weather and plants, Apia gave me a feel like it’s a different world altogether.
That’s all for this round, next episode I’ll be including more pictures and giving some sort of conclusion on Apia.
