Useful applications for my job

Instead of working hard, you’ve to work smart too. You just have to be amazed with how many hours could be saved if you were to choose the right tools to do the right things.
There are some useful and lightweight applications that I always use to improve productivity and keep my job fun. Here’s the list:
- PuTTY - A free telnet/ssh client for me to connect to Unix servers. Much more
powderfulpowerful than the default telnet.exe of course.
- FireFTP - I need to transfer files from/to the servers in a frequent basis, hence FTP client is a must. Unlike other standalone clients like Filezilla or SmartFTP, FireFTP is a FTP client that’s embedded into my favourite Firefox web browser.
- TightVNC - With TightVNC, you can see the desktop of a remote machine and control it with your local mouse and keyboard, just like you would do it sitting in the front of that computer.
- UltraEdit - A very powerful text editing tool with syntax highlighting and whatnots, highly recommended for script-editing purposes. It ain’t free though, if you’re looking for free alternative there’s PSPad and Notepad++.
- Unlocker - “Cannot delete file: It is being used by another person or program“. I’m sure you’ve come across this kind of frustrated situation before, and Unlocker is a simple tool that unlocks the resource for you to delete/move it freely without having to restart your OS.
- Renamer - A mini Windows program that allows you to rename files in bulk based on the rules you’ve defined. It becomes very handy when I’ve dozens of files with similar pattern to be renamed.
- PDF Creator - A free and ad-free utility that helps you convert documents to PDF format. I’ve mentioned this in my previous writing too :-)
- Windows Live Messenger - What? You must be kidding. How on earth does this improve productivity? Well, for me, it’s important ‘cos my boss is always not in office and it’s an effective way for me to communicate with her instead of emailing back and forth. Other than that, a short chat with friends won’t harm ^^
Other applications that I didn’t mention is the list are: Skype, Firefox (with a lot of cool extensions), 7-zip and Rainlendar. If I’ve missed anything here, please kindly give your comment.
