Instant messaging at work - yay or nay?
Jan 23rd, 2007 by ck
Since the introduction of the first modern IM - ICQ, in 1996, Instant messaging has evolved from a simple text chat IM client to a more sophisticated program that consists of eye-catching UI, webcam and VoIP support, fancy functions like nudge/buzz, custom emoticons/smileys and whatnots.
Not only that, it has completely changed the way we communicate. Teenagers obviously spend more time sitting in front of computers chatting via messenger, instead of writing letters to their pen pals in the Sealand.
Of course, there is one thing that most employers do not wish to see - with the widespread of Internet access, employees often use messengers during working hours. Many employers claim that by allowing their staff to use IM during working time, the productivity has seriously gone down - Hence, measures have been taken to block the usage of IM in office (of course, employees have their own “measures” to counteract it, using Meebo, for example), and the story goes on.
What is your view with regard to this matter? Do you think instant messaging has got any direct relationship with productivity? Do you think it somehow improves the way we collaborate? Do you think it is REALLY possible for employees to make use of it professionally? You can either comment it in my blog, or if you’re a LYN member, vote in the below topic:

think dat depends on individual… overuse for personal interest is abuse, overuse for work is productivity… there’s another pirated site call http://www.iloveim.com in case meebo fails..lol..
Seems like many employees can’t live without IM, according to the poll result :p
